WHERE CAN I FIND A MICROCHIP NUMBER FOR SMARTTRACE?

Our Microchip Numbers are usually 15-16 digits long will start with 991 900. Your microchip number will not start “ISO”

The Microchip Number can be located on your SmartTrace confirmation email or your SmartTrace registration card. However, if you have rehomed this pet and are/or are not in position of these any scanner will read your pets microchip.

IS IT COMPULSORY TO HAVE A PET MICRO-CHIPPED?

It is compulsory to have your DOGS chipped in Northern Ireland and Wales.

As of the 6th of April 2016 it will become compulsory in England. You can read more about this microchipping law in our blog post.

This is only compulsory for dogs. We advise however to have any pet micro-chipped to give you the best chance of been reunited if your pet was to go missing.

WHAT DO I DO IF MY PET GOES MISSING?

If your pet has gone missing and it does have a microchip please inform us ASAP of this and the last known location of the pet. This can be done via phone or by logging on to your online account.

WHO DO I CONTACT IF I FIND A PET?

If the pet has a collar always check if it has a nametag. Usually owners will pop contact details on there.

Firstly try to contact the owner, failing this we recommend you take the lost pet to a local vet or animal shelter (if you cannot do this please contact an animal warden) one of those professionals will be able to scan the pet to see if it has a microchip and reunite the lost pet with the rightful owners.

If not, please take the lost pet straight to a local vet or contact your local animal warden. This will be the quickest and easiest way to find the owner. They will be able to scan the pet for a microchip number and contact the owners of the pet.

The Environment Protection Act 1990 states any finder of a stray dog is to return the dog to its rightful owner, or contact a local authority (dog warden service) to report it and have the dog picked up.

HOW DO I AMEND ANY DETAILS TO DO WITH MY PET’S MICROCHIP?

There are a couple of different ways to change the details on your microchip.

Firstly you would need to log on to your SmartTrace account. Now if you are a basic member you can edit those details but they will come at a cost of £9.95 per change. Alternatively you could upgrade to a Premium membership for £19.95 and this will then cancel any admin fees on your account meaning you can edit your details as many times as you like.

You can also make these edits via phone changes are charged the same on the phone or online.

I HAVE A PET THAT HAD A PREVIOUS OWNER HOW DO I REGISTER MY PET?

In this case you will be asked security questions to answer failing to answer these correctly will result in you been presented with our contact number.

In this event we would do our best to contact the owner that is currently assigned to this chip. If we cannot trace the previous owner and we have had no contact from then to state there pet is missing within 28 days we are then able to register you as the legal owner of this pet. We will add your contact details to the chip for you to be contact however we cannot assign you as the legal owner before the 28days or before we have confirmed this.

WHAT IS A MICROCHIP AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

A single chip is no bigger than a grain of rice. Made up of just a few components all inside its tiny casual of Biogalss. Covered in a parylene coating to prevent migration around the animal’s body.

The brilliance of microchip implantation is its simplicity; a microchip is the easiest, safest most affective way of reuniting pets with their owners. A simple scan over the animal to find the chip will bring up the chip number on to the scanner this number when put in to the correct database will hold all owner contact details.

WHERE CAN I GET MY PET MICRO-CHIPPED?

Any vets will microchip your pet; alternatively you can find a mobile implanter that has had the correct training to microchip your pet.

CAN I REGISTER A FOREIGN MICROCHIP WITH SMARTTRACE?

Yes, we will do the necessary check on the chip to double check it is not registered with a UK database, and then yes we will register a foreign microchip onto our database.
